According to the new policy of the American Medical Association (BUT), racism is a "serious public health threat".
Organization, which represents the largest group of doctors in the United States, adopted a policy, to combat the impact of racism on health care and medical research.
Last week, AMA House of Delegates, including more 600 representatives of various medical specialties, published a statement, which details the three levels of racism: systemic, cultural and interpersonal.
Each of these levels, - they stressed - poses a threat to quality health care, in parallel influencing the living conditions of already marginalized segments of society.
"The American Medical Association recognizes, that racism negatively affects and exacerbates health inequalities among historically marginalized communities. - emphasized AMA board member Willard Edwards - Without systemic and structural changes, injustice <…> will continue to exist, and the overall health of the nation will suffer ".
“Declaring racism as an urgent public health threat is a step in the right direction, which will help achieve equality in medicine and public health ".
AMA will also adopt a policy, which recognizes police brutality as “a manifestation of structural racism, from which representatives of ethnic communities are disproportionately affected ".
