Recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic gain immunity
Although COVID-19 patients can acquire immunity to the virus for at least five months, they risk remaining carriers of the disease. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of the Public Health England study (PHE).
Testing and expert conclusion on COVID-19
PHE has regularly screened tens of thousands of healthcare workers across the UK for new cases of coronavirus since June, and also for the presence of antibodies, which show, that they are already infected.
According to Profile magazine, the experts concluded, that immunity, acquired naturally from those, who was sick with COVID-19, provides 83% protection against re-infection compared to those, who hasn't been sick before. Immunity remains at least 5 months from the date of infection.
However, PHE warns, what, although patients with antibodies have temporary protection against COVID-19 infection, data from the next stage of the study show, that some of them remain carriers.
Security measures after recovering from COVID-19
This is why it is imperative to continue to be safe and self-isolate., even if you've already recovered from COVID-19, experts explain.
Now we know, that most of those, who contracted the virus and developed antibodies, protected from re-infection, but this is not yet final data. – сказала профессор Сьюзан Хопкинс, Senior Medical Adviser, Public Health England and Head of Research Team. – Кроме того, we don't know yet, how long will the protection last.
More importantly, according to our data, they, who recovered, can still be contagious and carriers of the coronavirus.
